I saw this original idea first on
Better Homes & Garden, and then happened upon a very creative version on
The Lettered Cottage. I LOVE this doily pattern on a white pumpkin for fall elegance and simplicity, so I made these for my fall wedding reception centerpieces and arranged next to orange and green floral accents on the table. I used a copper acrylic paint for an autumn theme, but black would be festive for Halloween.
All you need is the following:
Pumpkin
Paper Doily
Scissors
Acrylic Paint
Paint brush
Tape or Spray adhesive
Cut out the center of the paper doily to fit over the pumpkin's stem.
Tape the edges along the top of the pumpkin for your desired stencil border. Pumpkin and stencil sizes vary, so I cut and overlapped my doily to fit the pumpkin while keeping the pattern continuous. You really can't make a mistake.
Paint all the open areas. Don't use too much paint as it can run into open patterns next to each other. I also painted outside the doily's bottom scalloped border for an extra patterned effect.
Let dry. Peel off the taped doily paper.... Voila! You can always hand touch up stenciled areas after removing the paper doily for your desired density of paint color.
Place outside on the fence... to celebrate the season
